CPRE Oxford Green Belt Way Stage 1. Thornhill to Nuneham Courtenay |

7.5 miles (12.1 km). Thornhill to Horspath Turn left out of the park and ride (1), and left through gate onto fenced path. Follow hedge on left uphill through recreation ground. At top corner, turn left over double footbridge, then right and follow winding fenced path to kissing gate onto Shotover Plain (2). Cross over the Plain to turn left to follow line of short marker posts along restricted bridleway (not marked on OS map) following edge of wood. At far right hand corner of the Plain, bear half right passing metal finger post through bushes and hedge gap (3). Continue following outside edge of woodland for 150 yards (140m). Where it bears right into field corner, bear half right crossing field corner and through hedge gap. Follow path marked with OGBW waymarks straight on downhill through scrubland for ¼ mile, eventually forking left to kissing gate (4) into field with views towards Horspath and Cowley. Continue straight on downhill to gate and stile, and follow field boundary on left to kissing gate. Go through gate into alleyway, ignoring branching alley on right to emerge onto Manor Farm Road. Turn right and follow road to the crossroads in village centre. Horspath to GarsingtonFollow road signposted to Wheatley passing the Chequers pub and under disused railway bridge. At junction with Gidley Way (5), cross road and go through gate, to follow fenced bridleway to gate in far corner of field. Continue beside the hedge to a bridle bridge. Here follow bridleway straight on towards electricity pylon to gap in hedge. Continue uphill passing under the pylon to reach top right hand corner of field and join green lane. Follow this uphill to Wheatley Road (6) and turn right onto footway along the road for one-third mile. Where footway ends, turn right across road over low stone stile (7) and follow enclosed path uphill to stile. Continue straight on across field to stile in hedge where panoramic views both ahead and behind can be enjoyed. Here bear slightly left across field to join hedge on left following it downhill to stile. Continue along enclosed path to wicket gate onto Oxford Road. Garsington to Toot BaldonTurn left passing Red Lion pub on right and shortly afterwards look for half hidden metal finger post on right (8). Here turn right crossing concealed stile onto fenced path. On emerging into field follow hedge on the right downhill. Where hedge turns right bear slightly left down field to join hedge by Y-shaped tree continuing to follow hedge to field corner. Here turn left over footbridge, and then right to cross field towards concealed stile in right hand corner. Follow hedge on right to stile onto concrete road, and continue to B480 (9). Cross road (9) and follow path straight on over footbridge and stile, and then along hedge on left to a culvert. Bear slightly right across field to cross footbridge into right-hand corner of copse. At far side of copse bear left over footbridge then right following hedge on right. After 60 yards (55m), by gap in hedge, turn left onto a crossing path and head for distant electricity pylon to reach a hedge gap and culvert. Now follow a grassy track beside hedge on right, straight on through two fields and continue up lane into Toot Baldon (10). Toot Baldon to Nuneham Courtenay At T-junction by the Mole Inn turn right and continue for ¼ mile passing Wilmots. Just before left hand bend (11), turn right onto bridleway following farm drive. Where drive bears left, fork right along green lane to gates. Here turn left onto fenced track to cross stile by gate, then continue beside hedge along top of field. Just before reaching a crossing electricity line, having passed through a gap in an old fence, bear slightly right across field to cross stile left of a clump of willows in far corner. Now turn left onto grassy track following hedge on left for one-third mile to gates onto to road (12). Continue straight ahead on road for 75 yards (70m). Where the road bears left, turn right onto bridleway following this for nearly ¾ mile to reach A4074 at Nuneham Courtenay (13). |
